Big Spring High School
Marching/Honor Band
2005/2006
9th Grade

Band started this year with two-a-days for marching on August 1. Two-a-days lasted for two weeks and overlapped volleyball two-a-days for part of that time.

The 2004/2005 honors band qualified to go to Carnegie Hall by sending in their 2004 UIL performance CD and being selected to perform. The band will be going to New York in early June 2006 to perform.

Because of the amount of money required for the New York trip, Band Booster fund raisers began early, in mid-summer before school started. We did bake sales, a car wash, had a booth at Pops in the Park, and had a booth at Funtastic Fourth. During the school year there were several more fund raisers. We sold discount cards, cookie dough, chrysanthemums, tickets to an "Air Extreme" play day, developed and sold a cookbook, had Coke Truck sales, sold wrought iron crosses, poinsetias, etc......

When sectionals started this year Andrea made 8th chair. She moved up to 7th chair for a week and then went back down to 8th.

On November 28 Andrea placed 2nd out of 11 at All Region auditions in Andrews and qualified for Area competition, which means she will letter in band this year.

On December 15 the band had their Christmas Concert.

On January 7 area qualifiers went to Odessa Permian for 4A Area I competition and Andrea placed 13th out of 19 flutes but finished first among Big Spring flutes that qualified for area competition.

After Area competition the band was split up into three different bands. Andrea made first chair in 2nd band. A week or two later she was moved up to 5th chair in 1st band (Honor/Varsity Band).

The Region VI Texas Music Educators Association High School AAAA All-Region Band Concert was held on January 28. The Junior High All-Region band played at 5:00pm and the High School played at about 5:30pm.

On Saturday, February 11th Andrea, DeAnna Carlisle, Meredith Fillingim and Mellissa Franco performed at Solo & Ensemble competition in Monahans. They played Sonatina Giocosa by McKay and received a score of '1'. Because of the trip to Carnegie Hall this year they didn't compete at state even though they qualified.

On April 10th the three bands went to Odessa to compete in Concert and Sight Reading. The varsity (honor) band received straight 1's in both concert and sight reading. They also won Sweepstakes.

At noon on April 27th the honors band played at St. Mary's in their Eastertide concert series.

On Sunday, May 21st, at 3:00 the honors band played their Carnegie Hall program at First Baptist Church.

All day Monday, May 22nd, the honor band played at the municipal auditorium for the elementary schools.

June 4 through June 8 the band went to New York to play at Carnegie Hall.

Left Big Spring High School Band parking lot at about 1:30am. Arrived at DFW airport at about 7:30am. Ate breakfast at the airport and caught our flight to LaGuardia at about 9:00am. Arrived at LAG airport at about 1:00pm collected our luggage and went to the hotel (Park Central New York). Had to wait until 4:30 for our rooms to be ready so our group went on a short walk. After our walk we checked into our rooms and then went to Planet Hollywood for supper. After that we went to the Empire State Building. It took over an hour to go up. It was raining when we got there so we didn't stay outside very long. It then took about 30 or 40 minutes to get back downstairs.
    June 5
Got up early and ate the carry out breakfast provided by the band boosters through the hotel.
