Moussaka
(Futule Clone)
   

This recipe is supposed to be a clone of Futule's Restaurant in Verona, PA. I have changed it up a little bit. Items in the original recipe that I took out are highlighted in Blue. Those that were added by me are highlighted in Red.

                                   

Ingredients
Base:

1 med - Onion, chopped
1 1/2 T - Vegetable Oil
1 lb - Ground Beef
1/4 C - Red Wine
1 C - Tomato Sauce
1 C - Tomato Paste
3 - Eggplants
Bread Crumbs
Salt, Pepper, Garlic, Oregano
    Cream Sauce:

2 C - Milk
3 - Eggs
2 T - Butter
2 T - Flour
White Pepper
1 C - Grated Cheese



Instructions
  • For Base:
    • Grease sides of 9x13" baking pan
    • Saute onion in oil
    • Add ground beef and brown
    • Add wine or tomato sauce and tomato paste
    • Let simmer until thickened
    • Slice eggplant
    • Dip into breadcrumbs and fry in skillet until browned
    • Overlap one half of eggplant slices in baking pan
    • Top with ground beef mixture
    • Repeat overlapping of eggplant on top of meat
  • For Cream Sauce
    • Pre-heat oven to 350°
    • Melt butter in a large pot.
    • Stir in flour and cook a minute or two until the sizzling calms down
    • Add milk, whisking until smooth
    • Whisk milk mixture into eggs and return to pan
    • Cook until thickened
    • Add pepper and cheese
  • Pour thickened sauce over eggplant
  • Bake about 1 hour or until dish is cooked through and top is golden brown
